Netflix dominated the Emmys last night

It’s hard to believe, but not too long ago, streaming giant Netflix was the underdog of the Emmys; the smaller and brattier sister of the creators of “real” televisions like HBO, the prestige network behind shows like The Sopranos and Thread. But over the past decade that has all changed. They racked up more than 600 nominations, including 160 for the 2021 ceremony alone. Last night, they snagged the most talked about and esteemed awards of the night, a moment that means the death knell for premium television is some time away. something that you have to “log in” every week, and can instead binge on in one sitting.

As such, it’s entirely fair to say that Netflix has dominated the Emmys for 2021. While other streamers, like Hulu, Disney +, and Amazon Prime have released their blockbuster shows, few could match the weight. from one show in particular, which seemed to win in almost every category it was eligible for: The crown. But it has not been without its drawbacks, especially in a banner year for black talent on television.

So what were the main takeaways from last night’s Emmys?

The Crown and Queen’s Gambit cleaned up

It seemed The crown had one nomination, if not multiple nominations, in each category for which he was eligible. In the end, the show won 11 awards in total, sweeping in particular the categories of actors. Josh O’Connor (King!) It was such a stunning sweep that he momentarily resurrected Thatcher from the dead, as a reporter asked Gillian on the red carpet if she was speaking to the former PM- embodiment of evil in preparation for the role. She passed away eight years ago.

Elsewhere, the series has won the well-deserved award for Best Drama and numerous screenwriting and directing awards, solidifying its status as one of the most compulsive and beautiful series of recent years.

The Queen’s Gambit was another big hitter expected on the night, winning 11 of his 18 nominations, including Best Limited or Anthology Series. No prize for Anya Taylor-Joy, but with several projects underway, she will soon be on this podium.

Michaela Coel won, but deserved more

It was expected to be a bigger night for Michaela Coel, whose work on I can destroy you saw her nominated through acting, directing, scriptwriting and production awards. In the end, the BBC / HBO show won for its writing, beating Easttown mare, WandaVision and The Queen’s Gambit. In a touching award, Michaela dedicated her speech to survivors of sexual assault, taking the opportunity to speak directly to writers as well: “Write the story that scares you,” she said.

Fashion was impeccable

She may have been styled for the job by her co-star Olivia Colman, but the outfit for the evening was clearly Emma Corrin’s custom Miu Miu look; something like a hybrid of Catwoman and The crucible. Star companion The crown Josh O’Connor wore a custom Loewe look, both styled by Harry Lambert.

After her Balenciaga look at the Met Gala, Michaela Coel wore a neon yellow dress by American designer Christopher John Rogers. Cynthia Erivo wore a Louis Vuitton look scalloped with feathers.

But maybe our favorite moment was Elizabeth Olsen – Mary Kate and Ashley’s sister – who rose to represent WandaVision wearing a dress from The Row. Keep it in the family!

Black actors slept

There has been a measurable increase in the number of black nominees at this year’s Emmy Awards, with actors from Bridgerton (Régé-Jean Page), Lovecraft Country (Jurnee Smollett), Pose (Billy Porter), I can destroy you (Paapa Essiedu) and Blackish (Tracee Ellis-Ross) recognized for their contributions to their respective shows over the past year. But instead, all of the major acting awards went to White Actors instead. Additionally, the Television Academy failed to make an even bigger statement by honoring MJ Rodriguez – the first trans woman to earn a nomination for Best Actress in a Drama Series – for her work in Pose over the past three seasons. In the night, Michaela, RuPaul, Lovecraft Countryby Courtney B. Vance and SNL Dave Chappelle and Maya Rudolph went home with prizes.
