Man City and AC Milan’s third Puma kits using same model draw criticism on social media


Third kits for the new season have dropped in droves this week as clubs across Europe complete their match wardrobes for the 2021-22 season.

Rather than releasing their latest kits one club at a time, Puma instead opted for a 10-part launch on Wednesday which saw the introduction of new alternative third shirts for Manchester City, AC Milan, Valencia, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Marseilles. This approach made sense, as Puma released a whole collection of kits based on the exact same model.

The manufacturer said it is looking to deconstruct the conventions of football shirt design by removing the club crests from the traditional chest position and repositioning them on the back, just below the collar. The various badges are also present in the graphics used on each shirt, embedded in the fabric in the form of an all-over “wallpaper” print.

Additionally, we see the standard badges and logos replaced with a wide band with the club name stretched across the chest, with all of the respective sponsors glued underneath – because this bold reinterpretation of all that a soccer jersey can be. obviously does not extend. to play with commercial income.

While meant to defy norms and showcase kit design through a brave new lens, the resulting designs are actually quite shocking – especially to the traditionalists among us – and generally serve to give them all a basic training outfit air.

There’s a little more to Gladbach’s variation on the theme, with the angular club crest and bright, eye-catching trims serving at least to create a design that borders on visual interest.

An oversized sponsor logo sets the Rennes shirt apart from the crowd, but it’s another French garment that’s anything but chic.

A pre-match warm-up kit by another name, you’d expect Mesut Ozil wearing it while casually juggling the ball in the spotlight ahead of a Europa League game.

Krasnodar was abandoned with the most banal design of all. It’s dangerously close to being a white t-shirt, although the club’s name written in Cyrillic is a nice touch.

Mint green and black, the PSV jersey is adorned with wordy sponsor logos on the front and stretched on the back. It is as if the kit was designed only using Microsoft Word.
